Environmental impact of the Internet

Human activities are responsible for almost all of the increase in greenhouse gases in the atmosphere over the last 150 years. The largest source of greenhouse gas emissions from human activities is from burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation.[1]

Electricity: The internet, email, and cloud services are responsible for carbon dioxide emissions from the production, powering and cooling of computers and smartphones and other devices needed to support these systems.

Recent studies estimate that internet and digital technologies already contribute between 3.7% to 7.9% of global greenhouse gas emission, which is similar to carbon footprint of the whole airline industry. [1],[3]

What’s more, these emissions are predicted to double by 2022.

We cannot sit still and wait for the internet to become carbon neutral – today’s actions are causing tomorrow’s climate change. We must all take full responsibility for our digital carbon footprint – today.
